Hierbas Paraguayas S.A.C.I. (Hierbapar) is a Paraguayan company dedicated to the purchasing, processing, and selling of herbs, spices, and sesame seeds. The company was created in 2001 by the Stadecker family, and since 2013 is being run by the second generation, the sisters Pamela and Belen Stadecker.
Hierbapar has USDA and EU organic certifications. The company was fully focused on herbs and plants for infusions and spices on the local retail Parguayan market. But as most of their small-scale producers were also producing sesame, the company decided to embrace that market as well. The company’s plant is one of the few Paraguayan processing facilities capable of producing hulled sesame seeds, which is seen as a value-added by some of their clients, and are willing to pay extra for this product.
Impact Thesis :
Hierbapar works with 588 smallholder farmers for the aromatic herbs business line and 726 for the sesame seeds, with an average of 3.0 Ha of land each, managed mostly by women. Most of the sesame seed producers come from the same families that already worked with Hierbapar over the previous years, which has increased the positive economic impact in the regions the company has historically supported. Having organic certifications, the company incentives its producers to implement good farming practices aiming at the positive environmental impact this brings.
The raw materials come from families located for the most part in economically and socially vulnerable regions of the country, such as San Pedro, Caaguazú, and Itapúa. Hierbapar selects the most responsible producers and provides them with seeds, training, and comprehensive technical advice through Agricultural Engineers strategically located in these departments to control and protect the different crops from sowing to post-harvest, providing certainty on the safety and quality for the producer and his investment.
