Palm oil farmer and processor

COLOMBIA

Poligrow is a palm oil farmer and processor established in Mapiripan, Colombia in 2008 by an Italian family active in renewable energies, after an invitation from the Colombian government to invest in rural areas affected by drug trafficking and with the presence of illegal armed groups in previous decades, but which were recovered thanks to the actions of the public force.

The palm oil produced is destined both for domestic consumption and the export market through large exporters. Its oil is RSPO-IP certified, which confirms that the orgin of their products are not coming from plantation that have been planted on a previous forest area.

Impact Thesis :

Poligrow’s workforce consists of 599 workers, mainly from the Mapiripan region, being the main employer in the area. Among the workers are former guerrilla fighters, mothers heads of households, and members of indigenous communities, who have found in the company a legal income source to replace an economy previously driven by coca crops.

The company has also brought development to Mapiripan and its surroundings thanks to the establishing of Electrimapiripan (the only power company in town) and the Poligrow Foundation.

Additionally, both the design of the plantation and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices implemented since the crop's inception allowed not only to prevent deforestation but to preserve the already existing forests (Preserved forest 1,473 hectares) and, with them, protect the local flora and fauna (below some pictures of species witnessed on the plantation).
